Driven by a vision of an Indonesian society made up of efficient and fair business community, enlightened political community, and vibrant civil society, IPCOS commits to provide quality services closely related to policy studies and civil society’s self-reliance.

Operationally the purpose of the Institute is to provide some developmental activities, which include researching and developing new ideas, opinions, and concepts; disseminating ideas through seminars, discussions, publications and public relations activities; putting ideas into practice through workshops and trainings.

The Institute has cooperated with various donor and multilateral agencies, focusing mainly on democratization and decentralization. The beneficiaries of our activities are mainly civil society organizations, local governments, media community, and society at large.

This website present resources to issues of concern to IPCOS, such as: People and Local Politics, Peace and Security, Institutionalization of Democracy, and Advocating Justice for Marginalized.

What we discuss on “People and Local Politics” is the relation between the local government and its society post the economic crisis in which developed distrustful sense among the society towards the government institutions.

During the New Order Era, military domination on national security was high. Hence, security is constantly associated with military roles thus disregarding the role of society. This issue is described in “Peace and Security”.

The political changes also lead to a greater freedom of expression, association, and free and fair election. To conserve these values, “Institutionalization of Democracy” is a necessity.

Throughout Indonesia history, certain part of society has always been left behind. The political freedom and the economic development have failed to address the plight of women and disadvantage and groups. Our effort to promote the modern democratic society in Indonesia has a special focus on “Advocating Justice for the Marginalized”.

In our years of activity, we saw business community’s rising role in politics following the declining role of military and bureaucracy. This phenomenon coupled with a weak legal and justice system caused rampant corruption practices while the old corruption cases go unpunished, resulting in undermine economic recovery and poverty alleviation efforts. It also encumbered people’s sovereignty. Hence, we put special concern on these issues.

We have no pretension to cover all issues regarding the democratization and political changes during the transitional process. We try to put our expertise and knowledge to share with all levels of society to build a new, democratic, humane generation.
